Ruger 10/22

Today I picked up a Ruger 10/22 deluxe, w/swivels for $240, in mint condition.

I'd like to mount a scope on it but I have some questions before I blindly proceed. Is this a job I can do myself or am I better off taking it and having it done? (I am quite handy). Suggestions for scopes?

I'm also interested in opinions/advice as to the best ammo, target and real life use. I picked up a brick of Win, HP 37 grain while I was there but if that can be improved upon I'd like to find out now.

I also got an additional 25 round mag w/ the deal.

What about slings? Anyone have a favorite type of sling?

I'm going to an Appleseed event in April and want to have all my ducks in a row by then.

Thanks

Here's a great link for your new Liberty Trainer Rifle 10/22.

...and mounting a scope is pretty easy.

Re: Ruger 10/22

Just be careful not to overtorque the screws. The receiver is aluminum, and is VERY VERY easy to strip out.

Horrible design IMHO

And yes, I have a new 10/22 stainless with stripped threads.

True...also make sure you use some medium strength loctite on the scope rail screws attaching to the receiver. Be sure to leave it overnight before you clean the receiver. I ran into that issue at an Appleseed. My rear techsight was loose because I cleaned the gun with CLP right after I installed the techsights.

Oh and to answer your question on ammo. CCI works very well. At my last Appleseed, I used Wolf Match. $50 plus buck for 500 rounds. It worked really well. But it is very greasy!

Order a tap thats biggerthan the current holes and retap them. Takes about 5 minutes. I think you can go with 8x32 if i remember correctly. Thats what I did and it worked great.

Re: Ruger 10/22

Consider no scope, I have a couple 10/22s and I like the lightweight compactness of the iron sight rifle with its polymer stock. I usually leave the scoped rifle for hunting but the plain Jane one goes with me about everywhere.

Re: Ruger 10/22

I'm gonna take plain Jane to the range on Thursday but I still think I want a scope because of my eyesight.

Scope: Mine wears a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40

YMMV, I'm sure someone can recommend something "better"

Congratulations! Fine deal you got with that 25rd mag.

I haven't stripped mine out yet but I agree. I friend of mine didn't even wait for his to get stripped, one look at the design and he drilled and tapped to a larger size so he wouldn't have to zero it twice.

You younguns that suggest no scope tell on your age, us fogeys need glass.

Re: Ruger 10/22

Even if ya have decent eye sight it still ain't as good as what a scope offers. I've always been near sighted and it's to my advantage to use a scope if possible.

The second amendment ain't about duck huntin'.

Probably the most basic rifle anyone can have, yet the customization possibilities are almost endless. Since you asked about optics, in my case a simple 3-9 scope I got from Cabellas - they sell them with bullet-drop reticles for specific calibers - I paid $100 for it and do 9's and 10's at 50 yards. I added a few mods - you'll find the rifle is super easy to work on. As many have eluded to, watch the take-down screw. I ordered an alloy steel replacement with a hex head instead. I also installed a Volquartsen Auto Bolt Release, an exact edge extractor, a tactical charging handle, and topped it off with a rubber Hogue stock. I run about 1000 rounds a month through the damn thing and other than a bore snake and a little gun oil they take abuse like there's no tomorrow. Great gun - here's a shot I just took a few minutes ago on the dining room table...

Re: Ruger 10/22

A fixed 4x or 2-7x compact scope works well on the 10/22.

Markt, VERY nice stock! If you don't mind sharing the detail, who manufactured that jewel?

Re: Ruger 10/22

For a scope I would go with the BSA Sweet 22 2X7 http://www.fitsmybudget.com/product.php?productid=27057 , have the BDC is nice with a 22. I would also buy a box of each kind of .22 ammo you can easily find and try them all to find what your gun likes best...22 rimfire rifles are notoriously picky when it comes to ammo.

Federal Ordinance made them in the 1980s. None available now except rare specimens on Gunbroker (where I got mine).

Re: Ruger 10/22

I prefer fixed power scopes for most applications... my Ruger 77/22 (bolt-action equivalent of the 10/22) wears a Nikon 4X, paid around $90 for it. VERY happy with it, it's about the perfect magnification for a .22 for small critter hunting.

Re: Ruger 10/22

I concur with the 4x scope.

A 40 mm Red Dot works great too.

God made the Ruger 10/22 so you can mod it yourself. Great gun to break down and learn its workings. Its so fun.

I/we have two Ruger 10/22's
One with a simple scope (Bushnell 3x-7x)

both shoot real good :ok:

Re: Ruger 10/22

Not sure why one would be so ready to put a variable power scope on a rifle that is designed to shoot on average 50 yards. I would go fixed on a .22LR of any style.

if you are referring to me,

It's probably because i didn't know any better 20 years ago when i bought the scope.

Seems to work well though. Although I agree that it really isn't necessary.

Yes, please! I've got a Sweet 22 scope ordered for my 10/22, Natchez has them on sale right now. Also, where does one get these Houge rubber stocks?

Re: Ruger 10/22

They are great guns, but they need a lot of work out of the box. As you have read it's probably best to have it done, it's worth it.
The stock trigger is an insult, a friggin joke. Buy a real good trigger and pay an experienced ruger gunsmith to install it and test it.
Thats it, after that you have probably the best 22 semi out there.

+100 on the fact that the stock trigger is a bad joke. I had expectations of just keeping my new 10/22 stock, out of the box. Now I'm faced with replacing just the trigger group, will cost much more than the price of the rifle! That offends my sense of economy and right and wrong!

F' Ruger, I'm done with them! If they need to charge $300 or more for a quality 10/22, then for God's sake do so, instead of selling a POS for $170.

Irons 02-16-2010 07:22 PM

Re: Ruger 10/22

These folks make great triggers, I have installed 4 of thier triggers on my guns and they are first quality.
I don't have a 10/22 anymore because I just diden't have the money for the upgrade at the time, and they sure as hell need it!

I'm going to get a scope mounted on my daughter's 10/22 - took it to the guys I bought it from - they said they would have no problem making it work with the factory screws and mounts... although I do see that the screws are frickin' TINY and stripping them out would be easy.

The reason I'll have them do it is because they usually don't charge me to mount and sight if I by the scope, so that works...
